A little help, please?

in life

It’s February, which is the month that really kicks me around. Thank goodness it’s only 28 days this year!

I attribute it to years of living in the tundra of Minnesota, where somehow you made it through the cold of October thru January but February is like The Shining. Cabin fever takes over your sanity.

Never fear. No need to get the baseball bat yet. The Universe has ways of helping me out.

A few days ago I was feeling particularly bummed out when I got a phone call from The Gallup Poll. They wondered if I would take a survey about the quality of my life.

Would I? Heck yes, please! Of course there were the things that were kind of a bummer, like not feeling safe in town at night, but they paled in comparison with these questions.

“In the last 30 days, have you been unable to buy food for you or your family?”

No.

“In the last 30 days, have you been unable to provide adequate shelter for you or your family?”

No.

In the last 30 days, have you been unable to buy medicine for you or your family?”

Nope. And don’t I feel like maybe my life is a little better than maybe I’m letting on, February or not? Gratitude meter recalibrating.

i'm thankful

That being said, there is always a time to use your support system and ask for help. Molly commented on one of my posts last week asking what blogs and sites I went to in order to maintain my positive attitude.

I’ve got a few of them, like Think Simple Now and Rob Brezsny’s Weekly Newsletter, that I look forward to every week, and of course I like to laugh, so The Oatmeal and Crazy Aunt Purl are up there too, but I wondered if you could give me some insight.

What makes you feel happy and optimistic? What sites make you laugh? When you’re having a tough day (or month), where do you turn for inspiration? Please tell me in the comments. I could use some more of that in my life, even if I have a lot to be thankful for.

P.S. I knit my very first sweater and just blogged about it over at Jordana Paige. Check it out. There are some pictures of the sweater and me being silly. Of course.

So I realize I’m answering my own question, but I had to share an amazing experience I had today in Soquel. I know you’re a big hiker, so perhaps you’ve already been here, but I visited the Land of the Medicine Buddha today and left feeling soo uplifted. It’s open to the public, and you’re allowed to hike on their trails. I did the pilgrimage of the 8 shrines trail, which is about 1.5 mi so it’s fairly easy, and there are 8 shrines to visit along the way. The energy of that area is difficult to describe but just so healing and beautiful. They have workshops and retreats, which I will try to attend soon, but just being there is enough for me :)

Molly, I was just there a few weeks ago! Isn’t it rad? I definitely want to spend some more time up there. We did about a 6 mile loop and it was just divine. I’m so glad you found it and thank you for thinking of me and letting me know!
